300 Hours Of Community Service For Korans In The Crapper

I wonder why no Liberals are decrying this obvious denial of expression of the 1st Amendment?

A former Pace University student who twice threw copies of the Koran into a toilet at the school after disputes with Muslims pleaded guilty Monday to disorderly conduct in connection with the incidents.

Stanislav Shmulevich, 24, pleaded guilty as part of a deal in which he must do 300 hours of community service. He has completed about 80 hours of the service at a hospital, his lawyer said.

Holy Shiite! 300 hours! 300! Because it was a “hate crime.” When the Obamessiah is talking about change, I hope it includes doing away with unbelievably disturbing legal issues such as this. Do you think a Muslim would have had this sentence if he/she did that to a copy of the Bible?

But, 300 hours? My goodness. Way back in the day, a few friends and I got busted for joy riding in a golf cart after a little too much drinking. Our mistake was going off property. We ended up with a whopping 20 hours of community service each. While my Mom thought it was hilarious, it was certainly more serious then throwing a couple of books in the toilet.

Shmulevich, of Brooklyn, admitted he tossed the Muslim holy books into toilets at Pace on Oct. 13, 2006, and Nov. 21, 2006. A criminal complaint says the Koran that was recovered in the October incident “was covered in feces.”

Shmulevich, a business major and immigrant from the former Soviet Union, initially was charged with two counts of criminal mischief as a hate crime. The charge is a felony punishable by up to four years in prison.

Political Correctness run unbelievably wild.

Fellow Flush The Koran bud Rusty Shackleford blogs the story.

Allahpundit: Exit question: Assume his community service labor is worth the minimum wage. A de facto $1,755 fine for dunking two books in water?

Still Stacy: hate crime, schmate crime

Teach
Courts have long recognized that there are limits to “free speech”
Generally in criminal cases the judge has a considerable amount of leeway depending on such things as the pre-sentencing report from the probation department.
It is quite possible that the judge had good reasons for the 300 hours.

Well, John, I cannot completely disagree with you. One of the things missing in all the news stories is whose Koran’s they were.

But, still, 300 hours? He did not assualt anyone. He damaged 2 books. If someone’s feelings got hurt, TS.

And yes, you are correct on free speech. It doesn’t apply to everything.

But, 300 hours? Don’t you find that a bit extreme? That is 12.5 days. It will take a long time to get to that. It is more appropriate to a violent crime, or someone getting out of jail early.

I posted about it too. It’s maddening.

Is 300 hours better than 100 (or more) lashes? Love the ironic tone. You have been moved to my in-consideration blogroll list.

Good point, HannahJ. I suspect, though, had it been a Muslim country, he would have been killed.

I’ll trade ya links, what say ye, lass? :)

Does anyone remember the crucifix in the jar of urine? That man was actually paid for his “art”. Oh, wait, he only offended Christians. That’s okay, then.

Comrade Ryan’s democratic party advocates elephant dung on the Blessed Mother art as first amendment PC Humanities 101. Waiting for their portrait of 50 million aborted babies in trash cans, eh? Incarcerated inmates desecrate Gideon Bibles by using the pages for smoking materials. OMG?
