Vietnam ?? Back in the day, and I am old enough tio remember, and not from movies, both parties had left wings and right wings. Certainly there were Democrats, especially those known as the yellow dogs, who were much more right wing than some Republicans such as Lindsey and Rockerfeller. It was the right wing of both parties that promoted war in Vietnam. Often using the same inflamatory rhetoric that we are hearing once again in Iraq. "Fight them there so we will not have to fight them here" "They are bent on world domination"In 1968 after Nixons victory was when the "cut and run" from Vietnam began. Our army was in revolt with at least 800 incidences of fragging. It wasn't until 1971 that congress was able to pass legislation that had had force in ending the war, again like Iraq, long after public opinion had demanded it.
Sound byte rhetoric and name calling Defeatocrats, Surrender monkeys, traitors, etc can not obscure the fact that an overwhelming percentage of Americans want this to end

Democrats make up only 1/3 of the voters, 1/3 are independents and 1/3 Republicans Bush's policies have force most of the Independents over to the Democrats and about 25% of the Republicans.
One of the similarities I see with Vietnam, and others can also be made, is that we have yet to be able to find or create an Iraqi government that has meaningful support from the people of Iraq. Let's remember that the main bloc in support of Maliki is that of the Sadarists. And now we are arming the Sunnis, who have killed more Americans than al Queda.
4 years of occupation and we still have no real partner in the Iraqi government. If Bush or any of the other war promoters REALLY believed that this was a battle for the survival of our civilization than they should have sent 500,000 troops or a million or whatever it took.
