WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Bush’s immigration bill essentially died Thursday in the Senate, when members voted against advancing the controversial legislation.
The tally was 46 to 53, 14 votes shy of the 60 needed to end debate.
I wonder if Ted "Swimmer" Kennedy is seething about the press totally ignoring his part in crafting the bill. I bet if it had passed, the MSM would have been talking up about how great Kennedy’s bill was, eh?
BTW, CNN’s headline has it as the bill suffering a "crushing defeat." Yeah!
I am going to switch to MSNBC’s version of the AP story, since CNN’s did not include this
"Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people, and Congress’ failure to act on it is a disappointment," Bush said after an appearance in Newport, R.I.. "The American people understand the status quo is unacceptable when it comes to our immigration laws. A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn’t find common ground. It didn’t work."
No, George, legal immigration is not one of our top concerns: illegal immigration is. You, and the other shamnesty supporters, should try paying some attention to the actual American People, not just your focus groups, lobbyists, and personal peeps. But, you are right, the status quo is unacceptable, because you and the rest of the Congress critters are doing zip to actually enforce the existing laws.

More: Heard on Fox News, though cannot find a story at this time, that Mike Chertoff is now saying that, since the shamnesty bill is dead, he will enforce existing laws. What, he couldn’t have done that before?
Ya know, with "Heck of a job" Brownie, at least his mistakes were made cause of not being able to do his job (mostly.) With Chertoff, this is thoughtful, planned out, blowing off of the law.
And more: still not finding the quotes by Chertoff, just hearing them on the news, but, Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), had this to say
But Sen. Elizabeth H. Dole, R-N.C., said many Americans "don’t have confidence" that U.S. borders, especially those with Mexico, will be significantly tightened, especially since legislation passed last year to set up hundreds of miles of border fencing had not yet been enforced.
"It’s not just promises but proof that the American people want," Dole said.
