Trackback Friday Featuring The Surrender Monkey: Regulate Neocon Radio

Happy Friday to all! It’s that time of the week again! Do you have an interesting post you want to share with everyone? The official Surrender Monkey of the Democratic Party says to do what the Lefties don’t, since they all have the same talking points: link it!

Surrendie is very sad today. He just read a very disturbing article in the Washington Times

A report from a liberal think tank yesterday criticized the "right-wing domination of talk radio," saying the current landscape does not serve all Americans.

In a report titled "The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio," the Center for American Progress concluded that 91 percent of weekday talk radio is conservative, compared with liberal content at 9 percent. The group, which said it analyzed 257 news and talk stations owned by the five biggest radio broadcasters, calls for stricter media-ownership limits and public-interest requirements.

Surrendie does not like the fact that Liberals just cannot gain traction on the radio. Liberals control the majority of TV outlets, both news and regular shows, and dominate the print news media. Why not talk radio? It makes him weep.

"There is little free speech or free choice in a market system that pushes out one-sided information 90 percent of the time on the radio," said John Halpin, a senior fellow at the center. "Radio stations are licensed to operate in the public interest. Promoting one point of view over all others does not meet any reasonable public-interest standard."

"The American people should have a wide array of news sources available to them. The more opinions they can hear, the more news sources they can learn from, the better able they will be to make decisions," said Jeff Lieberson, spokesman for Rep. Maurice D. Hinchey, New York Democrat.

Mr. Hinchey is preparing to reintroduce his Media Ownership Reform Act, which among other proposals calls for a return to the "Fairness Doctrine," a long-held requirement that broadcasters give equal time to opposing views when covering political issues. The doctrine was repealed in 1987 because it violated the First Amendment.

I probably do not need to explain it to you, the Conservative reader, but, for any liberals/progressives out there, here goes.

The Constitution makes no mention of the "public interest," other then possibly in eminent domain. What it does make vast mention of are the duties and powers of the three branches of the federal government, protections for the People to avoid government tyranny, and what powers the federal government does not have a reserved for the people and the States. The Bill of Rights section was put in to limit the government, not give them powers. The first paragraph states

THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.

That is the point of the Bill of Rights.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

If either the House or Senate, or both, pass the Fairness Doctrine, they are in violation of the 1st. It doesn’t even have to make it to President Bush for a hopeful veto.

The fact is, liberals, Conservatives dominate talk radio because the formula we use offers entertainment along with political discourse. Discourse that is popular. And it makes money. Rush, Hannity, Boortz, Levin, etc, do not pay stations to carry their programming. Air America does. In fact, they have to. Liberals have tried numerous times to gain traction, and for the most part, have failed. They aren’t interesting, even for liberals. People, even liberals, can only take so much outrage and seething. There has to be some true humor, some fluff, and some basic jocularity. Few can pull it off on the liberal side.

Furthermore, liberal radio tends to take the track that if you do not believe what they are saying, then you are a complete moron, and go away! And they are mostly just angry. Yes, there are a few conservatives that take that track. I care little for Michael Savage. He is angry. Mark Levin, I can take in small doses. He seems a bit too angry for me, as well.

You can break it down any way you want, disect it, spin it around, but the fact remains, even liberals would rather listen to right wing radio, hence the ratings and the domination. But, in liberal world, if you aren’t good enough to actually compete, legislate. Regulate. As our friends on the left say regarding morally repugnant TV shows, if you do not like it, change the station. Nothing in the Constitution stops you. Or try and compete.

Michelle Malkin is discussing the Fairness Doctrine, as well, and you can find a ton of links to others.
